  • Magic Bean Games releases a new board game titled “Shilla: Smile of a Millennium”
Magic Bean Games announced today (28th) that they have completed the development of the board game “Shilla: Smile of a Millennium,” which is themed around restoring and beautifully decorating the Shilla Millennium Palace. This game was selected for the ’23 New Growth Game Content Projects” sponsored by the Korea Creative Content Agency and will be officially released. The historical background of the game “Shilla: Smile of a Millennium” is set in the heyday of the Shilla Dynasty in the 6th and 7th centuries. Queen Seondeok, Princess Misil, Kim Chun-chu, Kim Yu-sin, and Munhee are called upon from the past to restore the palace at the site of the Donggung and Wolji ponds, which remain today. Although Shilla once held the tile of the lo9ngest-lasting kingdom in history, now its history is locked in the moonlit Wolji pond. Players must unearth the stories from history and restore the Shilla Millennium Kingdom by harmonizing forests and pounds within the palace grounds, building palaces, temples, and towers. As the splendid palace is restored and the smile of the previous year reflects in the moonlight, guests are invited to visit the palace and admire the beautiful Shilla architecture and surrounding landscapes. “Shilla: Smile of a Millennium” unfolds a story where visitors tour the palace complex to appreciate the beauty of the Shilla era.The game distinguishes itself by adopting action point limitations and tile-laying mechanics, as well as utilizing a system called the “class system” to introduce changes to turn order in each round. This provides a unique and enjoyable experience, setting it apart from similar games. Magic Bean Games CEO Hwang Yoon-soo stated, “Historical-themed games have been consistently popular among board games released overseas, but in Korea, there has been a limit to global expansion due to the perception of educational elements being too strong. However, from the initial planning stages, ‘Shilla: Smile of a Millennium’ has aimed for global expansion, with a historical theme and background but focusing on extracting as much history as possible and planning the essence of game enjoyment”.He continued, “While Magic Bean Games has mainly developed educational-based games in the abstract strategy genre so far, we devoted a lot of effort to the game itself as we ventured into a new genre this time. Particularly, there was a significant emphasis on artwork. We initially experimented with generative AI to vividly portray the characters’ personalities and traits based on real-life figures, but there were limitations in extracting the desired images. Therefor, we collaborated again with game character designers, and we are very satisfied with the result. Since we covered Shilla this year, we plan to continue expanding the series with Baekje, Goguryeo, Joseon, and more.”
